OMUSHANA, Sunshine for Children

Omushana, Sunshine for Children is a charity set up by friends from both Uganda and the UK who share goals to change lives of children, and contribute to conservation through education, in the areas around the mountain gorilla reserves in Africa.

Omushana means Sunshine in Rukiga, the local language in the locality of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, South-western Uganda, where the project was founded.  Both Rukiga and English appear in the full title of the charity (Omushana, Sunshine for Children) because our project is founded on a partnership between Uganda and UK.

The essence of Omushana is to make a positive contribution to children’s lives by improving their educational opportunities, welfare, confidence and enjoyment.  We achieve this by supporting and implementing projects to benefit children throughout the Mgahinga and Bwindi areas of Uganda, usually working with local schools and needy children's groups.

Our projects are hugely varied depending on LOCAL needs but share the common feature that the benefits are shared by large numbers of children.

We always aim to create maximum value with limited resources - 100% of donations reach our projects. We also aim to discourage dependency on continued support by encouraging sustainability.  Local communities in Uganda contribute to every project, in addition to donations from overseas.

By encouraging a high level of local community co-operation and sharing, coupled with a high level of monitoring and evaluation, we ensure there is no overspending of our precious donations and the results of our projects often exceed expectations.
